Courtney was starting her senior year at Madison-Grant High School as a member of the Class of 2009. A lover of animals; she was excited to start work soon for Dr. Ted Montgomery-Veterinarian. Her future plans were to attend Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion and to continue serving her Lord in whatever capacity He made evident to her. Courtney’s interests were many; tennis, Show Choir, singing, dancing, photography, watching movies, youth group with Bob & Misty Beall, animals and 4-H, restoring furniture and decorating. She was a member of the Summitville Fire Department. Her greatest passion in this life was serving the Lord and following His Word. Courtney was most comfortable, relaxed and happy when at home surrounded family and good friends. Courtney’s favorite Bible verse was Ephesians 5:18 and she embraced all of God’s Word…living and studying it at all times. She used her love of God’s Word to fulfill His purposes when she would counsel with friends during troubling times with a kind word, scripture verse or text. It would be most important to Courtney that those who still have a journey to fulfill continue in their faith and love of Jesus Christ…so that some day she may embrace them as they enter into the Kingdom of Heaven.

Courtney’s warm and beautiful spirit will be sadly missed but warmly remembered.

IN MEMORY OF VINCE DIXON - NILES, MI FIRE DEPARTMENT

It is with a heavy heart that I report to you that active City of Niles Firefighter Vince Dixon lost his life in a single vehicle accident on Sunday morning.  Sadly, Vince was only  22 years of Age at his death but he touched many during his short time on this earth.  Though many of us fight fires, Vince was one of those rare few who was a firefighters to their core.   His history with our department goes well beyond his rookie training as he has been a fixture at our station since he was young.  As a local neighborhood kid he would ride his bike to the station and dream of one day riding out with the guy's.  Since February of 2004 Vince has been an active member of our department receiving the firefighter of the year award on two separate occasions.   Vince truly loved the fire service.   In addition to working in some form or another at German, Clay, Harris, Warren, Notre Dame, Howard Twp, and of course Niles, he built many friendships with firefighters from around the area.  He was also an active member of the MABAS 201 Tactical Rescue Team.

The family was well aware of Vince's love for the fire service and has welcomed our involvement in his services.  Though planning is underway on how to best honor Vince, what I know at this point is that our personnel  plan to post a two person honor guard for the visitation.  Firefighters wishing to call in uniform on Thursday or Friday would be appreciated.  Additionally, any department wishing to provide apparatus for the precessional on Friday would be greatly appreciated.  If anyone has any questions or needs directions to either location please call 269-683-0160.  We realize that Vince was part of several other agencies and would welcome any other tributes that they might wish to add.

Visitation: Thursday at Halbritter's Funeral Home located at 615 East Main in Niles from 6 pm - 8 pm.

The Funeral Service will held Friday at 2 pm at Michiana First Embassy Church located at 1922 East Main also in Niles with a graveside service to follow at Silverbrook Cemetery in Niles which the entrance is located directly across the street from our fire station.

Please keep Vince's Family in your thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time.

Although this is not an Indiana District 1 death, Calumet City Illinois is on the border of Northwest Indiana. Additionally, several members of the Calumet City Fire Department are active members of the “Band of Brothers” Pipes and Drums and have played at “countless” events in District 1 and the entire States of Indiana and Illinois. Please keep the Ratkovich family and the Calumet City Fire Department in your thoughts and prayers.

Arrangements are pending and will be announced as soon as possible. Reliable information has suggested a Monday visitation and Tuesday funeral with burial at Chapel Lawn Cemetery in Schererville, In.

Please see below the announcement from “Band of Brothers” band manager and Calumet City Firefighter Ryan Hornback.

Stay safe.

Fire Chief

Schererville Fire Department

IFCA District 1

It is with deep regret that the Calumet City Fire Department announces the passing of current Deputy Fire Chief Joe Ratkovich.

The Deputy Chief passed away peacefully last night after a short but courageous battle with cancer.

Though he held the rank of Deputy Chief, Joe was truly a fireman at heart and will definitely be remembered by his colleagues as such.  In the last year, D/C Ratkovich was instrumental in providing the South Suburban Police Emergency Response Team with additional paramedics to expand their Tactical Emergency Medical Support program, and always gave 100% support to the guys involved.

Additionally, Joe was the backbone of the Calumet City firefighters belonging to the Band of Brothers Pipes and Drums.  If the band was ever called to provide musical support for a brother or sister killed in the line of duty, whether it be police, fire, or military, Joe made sure his guys were there without question.

The representatives from the Calumet City Fire Department are currently meeting with the liaisons from the Illinois Fire Chiefs Association to finalize plans for funeral services.  I will personally pass them on as they become available, but for now, please keep Joe, his family, and his brothers and sisters of the Calumet City Fire Department in your thoughts and prayers.
