                MV Adult Doubles League

The Way It Is and Must Be

History: Skagit Valley Tennis Association (SVTA) is a doubles league for adults.  We started about 14 years ago when a bunch of people wanted to have a good time playing tennis on a regular basis and improve their games through practice and sportsman like competitiveness. The league has been and still is organized, maintained and played by volunteers who donate their precious time to make things happen. We play all year around.

Contact:  To contact us about our “A” league you can call (360- 826-3702) or email (stanzski@hotmail.com) Stan Zyskowski.  For the “B” league call (360-429-7904) or email (jeffdmay@yahoo.com) Ann May.  There are also leagues in Burlington and Anacortes that we can put you in contact with.

Relationship with College: We coordinate with Skagit Valley College’s tennis team’s Cardinal Booster Club to use the clubhouse and outdoor courts.

League Fees: The fees cover the cost of balls that we buy and a donation we give to the college tennis booster club. For a session of three months the cost is around $30 when we are playing inside and less than that when we move outside. Fees should be paid as soon as possible to Phil or Jan Waterwall. Make checks to Cardinal Booster Club.  Some cash payments are appreciated for ball purchase.

League Matches: Match schedules take a lot of time to develop by the volunteer organizer. We do the best we can to attend to individual player’s scheduling needs, but at 35+ players, there is only so much we can coordinate.

Match Time (Inside): Try to come a few minutes before your scheduled match to get ready for a 10-minute warm up/practice with your partner and opponents. Matches last 50 minutes.

When we move outside in May the matches will start at 6:30

Rules and Sportsmanship: The league follows USTA rules “with grace.” When inside we switch sides at about half way through the match. Players are to treat each other with respect—no profanity (at least keep to a minimum), racquet throwing (no more than 20 feet) or anger outbursts (sorry but there is no way I can adhere to that one). Show up on time. Help keep clubhouse in good shape. Be responsible for your place in the match (see substitutes).

Standings and Ratings: The record of each league player will be listed on the Standings page.  Players on this page will be listed based upon percentage of wins (PCT), number of games won compared to games lost (GAMES) and then finally number of wins.  A tie counts as half a loss and half a win towards the percentage points.  In order for a competition to be considered a complete match, players must either compete for at least 30 minutes or complete at least six games.  A rough rating for each of the players will also tracked on the Ratings page.  These ratings are calculated based upon the matches the user plays and the ratings of those players they compete against.  The ratings are adjusted after each match.

Substitutes: You are responsible for scheduling someone to play for you. Take a look at the match you are getting a sub for and try to get someone who plays at a level that will make for a good match.  Let the other persons involved in the match know as well as Steve McConnell so that he can update the master schedule. If it is not someone from the contact list then provide your substitute’s contact information as well. Warning: we have a policy of three misses and you have to sit out next session, so don’t screw up!!!

Fun: Have a blast! Great people, great game.
