The Evenmere Books

of James Stoddard

The High House, and its sequel, The False House, were written as love letters to the Ballantine Adult Fantasy series.  Stoddard probably comes closer than any modern author to the style of pre-Tolkien fantasy.  I think of them as Lewis' Space Trilogy plus Chesterton's Man Who Was Thursday, with modern action pacing.  Not only are they wonderful books, however, but Stoddard made a game of them, putting in dozens of allusions to the BAF.

I have created an annotated list of all the names and places contained within the two books.  There are still a few holes (the author has told me that many of the place names are invented), so if you know a reference, please let me know.  Stoddard has also written one short story in the same universe, published in The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, which I have not read, but may result in an appendix to these other files.

Besides the Evenmere Books, Stoddard has written several short stories and has rewritten the first chapters of The Night Land, featured in the fascinating collection, Night Lands: Eternal Love.  His website is here.

These are the concordances I have written for the Evenmere books.  Beware, as they do contain spoilers.
