Congratulations on such a wonderful web site - what a thrill to have come across it. Has
anyone come across the parents of Dr William Richard Carmichael born about 1818
Dublin.Arrived Adelaide, Australia 1854 & married Mary Ann Holland 28 May 1856. I have
been working on this tree for many years but I must have proof of these parents. Every
lead points to Andrew Blair but nowhere can I actually find William's name printed. His
children were Andrew Blair, Jane Ellen Caldbeck & Thomas by his first wife back in
Ireland. I can not find his first wife's name.I have been told the children took their
grandparents names so I do know their was an Andrew Blair married Jane Caldbeck but it
finishes there. No William! Would be over the moon to find these answers

Hi Matt, I am searching for genealogy information on my family, the CARMICHAEL family. I
previously contacted another individual that concluded that her CARMICHAEL'S were not my
family line. She suggested that I contact you...that you may have information on the
CARMICHAEL family in Kentucky and Nebraska. My Grandmother is ELVA MAE CARMICHAEL, she was
married to CHARLES HARRISON ROSE. They raised their family in Omaha, Nebraska. Any
information you could share would be greatly appreciated. Hope to hear from you soon.

Hi! I was searching the net to try and find out about a woman by the name of Bessie
Carmichael Smith and came across your site. I bought a drawing by one such person back in
1973, in Albany, Oregon, at an artist's sale. I have often wondered if this person was
just a local artist or someone of some repute. I have not been able to find her on the
net, so I doubt that she is a well known artist, but I thought I would just check around a
little. Do you have any knowledge of this person? I also ran across a place called Bessie
Carmichael Elementary School in San Francisco, but couldn't find out who she was or why
they named a school after her. Lots of questions...would appreciate any information that
you might have...

Hi Matthew- what an unbelievable website!! I am a lifetime resident of Unionville Ontario
and have the great privilege to now be raising my own daughters in a heritage home just
off of Main Street Unionville. We moved into this house one year ago in June. We have two
windows in the house that both have names etched into the glass that say "Duncan
Angus Carmichael". So we are genuinely interested in knowing if this is an ancestor
of yours. We are beginning restorations on the house, which seems to have been built in
about 1881. We discover interesting tidbits of information almost weekly as we dig further
into the intricacies of this modest "cottage" type house. Do you think this may
be a relative of yours? Would love to know if anyone has any records of who this man was,
what he did, what he may have contributed to the development of Unionville, and if there
are any pictures of the house that might help us get it back to the way it was.

Hello Matthew I'm trying to confirm the parents of Martha Carmichael. After looking over
your web site, I'm hoping you can help me. Martha Carmichael was born in Indiana and
married a Samander Dale Atwood there on 1 June 1851. They would move west to southwest
Iowa. Right near the state line with MO. Martha and Samander had eight children and she
died in Page county on 10 Feb 1889. I believe her parents to be Archibald Carmichael and
Agnes Martindale. However, I have no solid proof yet. Are these people in your files? I
appreicate any help you can give me.

ancestor of my husband was William McMurchy (1800 - 1874) son of John McMurchy and Jane
Carmichael / McMichael. I think that there are also some connections by marriage. I would
be delighted to share information on this branch of the family, and would be delighted if
you can help me with other branches. Can I also check if you have been in touch with Jean

married into the McMurchy and related lines. With best regards

I'm always happy to return to your Carmichael site very interesting reading. I was
contacted by a Michael Carmichael from Oxford,UK. and we have some thing in common as it
turns out. Alexander R. Carmichael was our grand-father. I never realized that he had
married again.... Michael is trying to search for his family. and I know that we are not
really that closely related.... have in your searching any data on Alexander R.
Carmichael. he was married Jessie.Wilhemina Maxwell. My grand-father was a rugged
outdoorsman, who I know served in the RCMP during the Indian wars. But anyway....two
daughters: Jessie (Carmichael)Jackson. of Vancouver,BC Jennie (Carmichael) Benjamin of
Ottawa. Michael Carmichael and his wife Virginia reside in Oxford.UK. and brother Alan R.
Carmichael resided in the USA and now desceased. Alexander and his wife resided in
Sudbury. This is all new to me.... my step-mother or brothers never mentioned their
grand-father had remarried.... So if you can help out... would be most welcome......
Michael may contact you himself.....I gave him your Url address but for some reason unable
to get on the web page. Thanks you again. Faith.Iannandrea(Carmichael)

Please, allow me to introduce myself. I am Michael Carmichael, son of William Graham
Carmichael and grandson of Alexander R Carmichael & Jessie Wilhelmina Maxwell of
Sudbury, Ontario. I am searching for genealogical records or information concerning my
Carmichael ancestors. Mr Bill Adams of North Aston helped me to obtain a copy of my
father's birth record from Sudbury, Ontario, and I would like to know the details of my
grandparents dates and places of birth. My father was born in Sudbury in 1895, and the
family subsequently moved to Calgary, Alberta. From there, my father moved to the US,
served the RAF in WWI and returned to New York. He died in 1967 in the USA. I have
virtually no information concerning the Carmichael side of my family. One clue was that my
grandfather might have been the son of John Worke Carmichael latterly of Sudbury, who may
have some sort of connection with Ireland. One entry on a website concerning John Worke
Carmichael (I believe it was the Mormon site) indicates the birth of Alexander Carmichael
in Scotland in 1855 and of Jessie W Maxwell in Scotland in 1875 - but I have no other
information. My father had two elder sisters, Jessie and Jennie Carmichael - both of whom
survived into old age. Jessie married Sid Jackson, and they had a son named William
Jackson, who latterly lived in Vancouver. Jennie married H A Benjamin, and they had two
sons, Raymond and Harry and one daughter, Jean - all of whom survived into adulthood and
had families. The Benjamins lived in Calgary (Ray & Jean) and Ottawa (Harry). I have
not ahd any contact with any of them in over 25 years, and all seem to have vanished. If
you are able to make any useful suggestions to me concerning my interest in obtaining
further information about my family genealogy, I would be very grateful.

girls I live in Harrodsburg, Kentucky and we go back to Kentucky as far back as 1792 when
Daniel moved from Va to KY. There was also a Patrick Carmichael that traveled with
Louis and Clark, Daniel Boone and fought in the Revolutionary War. My father
suspects that this Patrick was Daniels uncle but he isn't sure. It seems to me that
we were a part of the settlement of Kentucky. If you have any information. Take

I own an instrument maker's lathe made by Holtzapfel and Co, London. It was supplied in
1844. In 1961 I inherited it through my father and grandfather. For a long time but idly,
I had been wondering if Holzapfel still made lathes. To-day by chance in a magazine,
'Woodturning', which I bought for my son, I saw a photograph of a piece exhibited by
Michelle Holzapfel in 'Collectors Choice' part of the Sculpture, Objects and Functional
Art Exhibition in Chicago. I put "holtzapfel" in as a keyword for a search and,
amongst many, got your site by chance. In your genealogical tree you may know of Michelle
H and of the famous manufacturers of lathes. If not, is there a clue here. From my
enquiries years ago when I was considering selling my lathe, I gathered that there is
considerable interest in Holzapfel lathes in America,

Am wondering please whether you have any information concerning Arthur Mitchell who was
aboard the Loch Ard. According to records here, he was identified by Eva Carmichael and
Tom Pearce when his body was washed ashore about four days after the Loch Ard sank. We
always take visitors to the (local) coast to see the sights. On being taken to the Loch
Ard cemetery, my father-in-law was astounded to find Arthur Mitchell's grave and story,
and said quietly 'I believe that's Uncle Arthur'. Apparently Arhtur Mitchell (uncle
Arthur) departed for Australia from Gravesend ... 'around that time' and was never heard
of again. We are trying to trace if it is the same person. When we lived in England, a
genealogist told me that all Mitchells and Carmichaels are connected, because 2 brothers
who survived Culloden, went their separate ways, one to U.S.A. and the other to Ireland.
He said they took the respective names of Mitchell and Carmichael as the nearest
translation of their original Scottish/Celtic name. We don't know how true or not that is,
but we wondered even whether that might have been a reason for Arthur Mitchell being on
board that particular trip with the Carmichael family... All conjecture and many
unanswered questions! Would be interested to hear if you have any information. Regards.

Comments: I own an instrument maker's lathe made by Holtzapfel and Co, London. It
was supplied in 1844. In 1961 I inherited it through my father and grandfather. For a long
time but idly, I had been wondering if Holzapfel still made lathes. To-day by chance in a
magazine, 'Woodturning', which I bought for my son, I saw a photograph of a piece
exhibited by Michelle Holzapfel in 'Collectors Choice' part of the Sculpture, Objects and
Functional Art Exhibition in Chicago. I put "holtzapfel" in as a keyword for a
search and, amongst many, got your site by chance. In your genealogical tree you may know
of Michelle H and of the famous manufacturers of lathes. If not, is there a clue here.
From my enquiries years ago when I was considering selling my lathe, I gathered that there
is considerable interest in Holzapfel lathes in America,

Comments: Am wondering please whether you have any information concerning Arthur
Mitchell who was aboard the Loch Ard. According to records here, he was identified by Eva
Carmichael and Tom Pearce when his body was washed ashore about four days after the Loch
Ard sank. We always take visitors to the (local) coast to see the sights. On being taken
to the Loch Ard cemetery, my father-in-law was astounded to find Arthur Mitchell's grave
and story, and said quietly 'I believe that's Uncle Arthur'. Apparently Arhtur Mitchell
(uncle Arthur) departed for Australia from Gravesend ... 'around that time' and was never
heard of again. We are trying to trace if it is the same person. When we lived in England,
a genealogist told me that all Mitchells and Carmichaels are connected, because 2 brothers
who survived Culloden, went their separate ways, one to U.S.A. and the other to Ireland.
Regards.

Comments: I have long been researching the family of my ggg grandfather Biley
(poss. Hardie) Smith (b. poss. 24 May 1752, Exeter, NH. d. 17 Jul 1831 Cornville ME. ) who
m. Martha Dudley and 2m. Lydia Elkins. I have encountered continual frustration due to few
available microfilm records for that region-- Actually there were at least two Biley
Smiths born about the same time (1747, to 1756) in the same area--roughly Rockingham, NH.
Both were civil war vets. This has caused me much researching grief. This connects with
your information. Although you seem to be interested in the first wife of Jonathan
Trefeathern and I know both branches claimed him for the DAR. Have you anything further
about this branch of your family and any suggestion of records I may research further? No
long ago I was given some history recorded by a Hazel Smith of Concord, ME. Her notes came
from a Mrs. Harry McGuire of Skowhegan. I don't know who these people were (and therefore
am not sure about the accuracy of the info.) but apparently Hazel Smith was quite a
researcher in her time. Anyway, her notes say that Biley Smith was the son of Joseph
Smith, Jr. and Susannah Williams who lived on the Upper Kennebec River in Maine. Further,
she says that Joseph and Susannah had five children: Thomas, William, Biley, Timothy and
Samuel. Thank You for any help you may be able to offer.

Comments: Just a side note on the Homestead Farm - the farm has been in the
possesion of Nina Nodwell (Mary's sister?) and run as a sheep operation since at least the
mid eighties. Her and her partner Les Richards are very involved in the local sheep
farming community. Lillian lived on the farm until about five years ago before she was
moved to the new old age home built on a corner of their property. She died at the age of
95 or something like that - her innumerable impressionist paintings cover the walls of the
house even today. Currently, two of the Nodwell daughters - Nina and Linda - reside there.
It looks like the farm will this year be finally sold, which seems like a shame to me.
Having travelled around the globe and seen places with real 'history' going back from 100
to 1000 years, it was nice to read your history of a place I grew up in and realise that
it too had some. Thanks for that,

My earliest known ancestor was George Thompson, born 1800 in Upper Canada. He seemed to
arrive in North Gwillimbury out of nowhere but appears in the 1837 North Gwillimbury
census as a Homesteader. It is reasonable to me the Thompson's buried in the Hillsburgh

area may contain a link. In any case I will keep looking. Congratulations Ken Thompson

Gender: F Birth: 17 Sep 1883 Ware, Georgia These girls were sisters - Eveline married
Henry Sanford Guthrie but she died soon after giving birth to a baby girl, Ora Mae
Guthrie. Henry Sanford Guthrie then married Cora Lee less than 2 years after originally
marrying Eveline! Henry and Cora then had 2 other children, Juanita Guthrie Booth and
Lewis Duncan Guthrie. Cora Lee Carmichael Guthrie and Henry Sanford Guthrie were my Great
Grandparents. Do you have any information on them?

Comments: Hi. What a great web page. My great great grandmother was Jane McMurchie
born near Caledon, Ontario to Donald McMurchy and Margaret McIntyre. She had a sister
Janet, and brothers Donald, Archibald and Edward. Archibald and Edward went to Wisconsin
with their Uncle Dougald McIntyre. Can you tell me how my McMurchies tie in with yours??

Comments: Interesting site you have. My dad was always proud of his Scottish
heritage, although there had been several generations of Carmichaels in Ontario by the
time he was born. He and my mother were the first of their immediate families to move to
the United States in 1938. Our family website is listed below, although it is not
specifically related to genealogy. Fay Carmichael www.sthubertsisle.com

Comments: Hi: Came across the History while researching the Caledon Mountain Trout
Club. Excellent! Am interested in all the local histories I can obtain of the area around
Belfountain where I grew up. My mother wrote Caves, Castles and Quarries back in 1967
which detailed the Belfountain and Forks of Credit areas. My brother married Phyllis
Watson and I believe a Carmichael was in the wedding party. Linda, I think. I collect all
sorts of stuff, including old post cards of the area. I have one of "The Carmichael
Memorial Home" which I know nothing about. I also came across.....but didn't
purchase...a paper weight which I think was made of acrylic, with a photo of the house as
I recall. Anyway, thought I would say hello and let you know that the availability of the
history is appreciated.

Comments: We continue to search for relatives of my father who came to the Canadian
Arctic in the 1920's. He was born in Ontario, we believe in the Beaverton area. Any info
we did have burned in the family home in the 1940's. The information we do have is sketchy
as per attached. I'd like to email Carmichaels from that part of Ontario - any idea how I
might do that?

Comments: I have begun searching information on the carmichael family. I am a
retired Black teacher. My fathers's family are carmichaels from South Carolina USA. Most
lived in Dillon County SC. Prehaps there is a slave connection. Our ancestry is legended
to have a "Nero" slave ancestor. Any information in that regard would be
appreciated.

Comments: I am the son of James Guy Carmichael son of John James Carmichael son of
James Carmichael. I think that James Carmichael was from County Tyrone, Ireland or had
close relatives there in Tyrone. He entered thru the port of Philidelphia, PA. He married
Ellenore Cassidy McCutcheon who was born in Omagh, County Tyrone , Ireland. My gradfather
was born on June 23, 1857. James his father died January 5, 1857. They were married in
1856. Grandmother later married James Orr and had seven children. She is buried in
Jennings, Oklahoma. James Carmichael is listed in the 1860 census as being 4 years old
which would match the dates I have. I would be very happy to share with anyone who could
connect with him or her, as I am at the "stone wall" and have been for many
years. My files contain Delarue ( de La Rue, De La Rois ) Hosick, Hosack, Douglas, Baker,
Grimes, Qualles just to name a few, and about 800 others in these families. All in some
manner connected to him after he came to the U.S. I am a member of Clan Carmichael both
USA and International. This is my first time on this page. It looks very interesting.
Thank You, Joe W. Carmichael, AIA, CSI JOEWMC@AOL.COM
