Frequently Asked Questions

I am not sure if drill is my thing, how can I find out?

During the months of October and November we hold tryouts.  This is the time to come and ride with the team.  We will practice simple maneuvers and introduce you and your horse to drill in a fun and relaxed manner.  If you want to come ride again (which you will) there will be an $8 arena fee.  The first night is free.

My horse is just a trail horse, what does he have to know for drill?

The basics really... Simple lead changes (working towards flying), ability to side step, ability to transition from a collected canter to a hand gallop and vice versa without loss of gait, Haunch and Forehand turns for performing pivoting and roll back maneuvers.  You will be absolutely amazed at how quickly a good trail horse can become an excellent Drill horse.  Of course no biting, kicking or bucking (other than an occasional expression of "feeling good"

I don't get to ride very often, will my horse be able to handle it?

Your horse needs to be in good shape since practices are strenuous and drills can last twelve minutes at a lope.  However, early in the season most of the practices are at slower speeds while we learn the drill.  You will be riding EVERY Monday night, so your horses conditioning will quickly improve.

I hear there is a lot of bickering on drill teams, is that the way it is?

Absolutely NOT.  This is a Professional Ladies Drill Team.  We are all working towards the same goal, to WIN!  Any concerns are taken directly to the Drillmaster or RC President.

Is it expensive?

Monthly dues are $40, but it usually takes $60 to $75 per month on the average for extras like stalls, camping, etc. at competitions.  The uniform and tack cost is approximately $250 to $500.  If able, we allow new members one year to pay for the portion of the uniform purchased from us.

What kind of commitment does it take to be on a Drill Team?

Pretty Big.  We practice Monday nights from 7:30pm to 9:30pm most of the year.  Breaking only in September after State Fair and December.  Other practices are as needed and voted upon. You are expected to attend all practices except for extreme illness or emergencies.  Monthly business meetings are held the 3rd Tuesday of each month
